Gallagher’s Pub & Grill – Huntington Beach

I’ve been living in Orange County for 2 years now, and sometimes I’m still reluctant in going to pubs or going out at night. No, I’m not 80 years old and I don’t have kids – OK, I’m married, but even before that I didn’t have a very active nightlife. I have always been one of those people who prefer staying home on a Friday night, watching movies or browsing the internet.

Things are slowly starting to change now. Since I moved here, I felt the need to explore different places and get out of my comfort zone more, so when I heard about a cool Irish pub in Huntington Beach I couldn’t wait to give it a try!

First of all, it was my first time in Huntington Beach during night time – I know, weird. I have always loved HB though; I think it’s my favorite “beach city” here in the O.C. It feels like a “real” city there, with crazy (in a good way, mostly) people, noise and excitement. The city is not perfect, and that’s exactly what I like the most about it.

Huntington during the night is pretty busy, too. There are a lot of pubs, bars and restaurants, always filled with young people. There are many different options for people to choose from, so I was happy to find out that there’s a place for (almost) all tastes in HB.

This time I chose Gallagher’s Pub & Grill, a nice little bar off Main Street. First, I have to say it was my very first time in an Irish pub, so I didn’t have any background or expectations! I was happily surprised when I got there. The environment was nice and calm, just the way I like it. There were some TVs around the pub, with sport games on – for those who enjoy watching games, it is definitely a great place to do so, while drinking a beer and hanging out with friends.

Speaking of beer, their selection is quite good. They have Harp, Guinness, Boddingtons, Killkenny, Magners, Pabst Blue Ribbon (to name a few), and of course, all of the domestic beers. The prices are also very friendly – domestic beers for 2 bucks and cocktails at a fair price as well. Having fun without worrying so much about my account balance the next day is a big I’ll-be-back factor!

Thinking back, I guess the place was calm and not so crowded because it was a Monday. My husband and I just grabbed a beer, sat near the bar and chatted for a while. A pub where I can have a nice conversation? That’s a big plus for me. Thank god they also serve food, because we were starving! I ordered the Turkey Club burger, which tasted awesome. This is a “reduced-guilt” burger (at least I tell myself that) that comes with a yummy turkey burger, crispy bacon and toasty wheat bread. It also comes with thick steak-type fries, which I couldn’t eat much – so much food! Plus, the staff is very nice and friendly, always assisting us with a nice smile.

They are also known for their breakfast/brunch – I was so surprise when I heard that! The pub offers a traditional Irish brunch, which usually consists in bacon, sausages and eggs. It sounds very American, but I heard that the Irish touches and some different ingredients make all the difference. I’ve been dreaming about this famous brunch; I have to try it out soon!

For those who like the loudness of a “normal” pub, don’t worry; Gallagher’s is the right place for you as well. They frequently offer live music (a bit of a rare thing in Orange County’s bars) and other events. A variety of awesome live band’s, including The Originalites perform every Monday night; that’s the time when the place gets pretty crowded. They also have different kind of fun events, like trivia and karaoke on Tuesdays and stand-up on Thursdays, after 9pm. I haven’t had the change to check out these events yet, but I will soon, since they’re so budget-friendly (the cost is zero, you only pay for your drinks)!

After my first experience at Gallagher’s Pub, I can say that this place can easily please different tastes. They have some tables inside to just chill and have a good conversation, a dance floor (very useful when bands are playing), TVs with sports on and an outdoor patio for the smokers or for those who don’t like it when things get noisy. It is just a great place for different occasions and moods.
